POCKET DICTIONARY / READ A LITTLE · TRY A LITTLE
Less jargon. More racket.
BPM, root notes, slices, gates, sends and other words the monsters keep using.
Beat, bar, BPM and step
BPM means beats per minute: tempo. A bar groups beats; four beats per bar is a common starting point. A step is one sequencer position, whose duration depends on the division. More steps do not automatically mean a faster tempo.
Root, transpose and slice
Root is the note at which a sample plays at its declared original pitch. Transpose moves musical pitch up or down. A slice is a selected part of the recording. Slices mode maps pieces without requiring each key to transpose the whole file.
Gate, one-shot, loop and envelope
Gate links playback to a held note. A one-shot plays its hit after a trigger. Loop repeats a selected range. An envelope shapes how a note starts, holds and ends. Release is what happens after note-off, not a promise that the original recording is infinitely long.
Gain, pan, send and headroom
Gain changes level. Pan places sound left/right. A send routes some signal into an effect path. Headroom is room below clipping; turning everything up does not create it. Start quietly and balance tracks against each other.
Audio, MIDI, render and bundle
Audio is recorded sound. MIDI describes notes and control events, not the sound itself. Rendering or bouncing makes a playable audio file. A project bundle keeps editable state and media together. Keep the bundle and the listening copy when a piece matters.

- Check iPad volume and the actual output route.
- Check master level, track level, mute and solo.
- Play a fresh note or pad. Stop transport and check Hold, latch or sustain if notes stay on.
- For recorded material, confirm an actual take was committed and is within the playback loop.
- Do not reset or delete the app to troubleshoot. Back up first, then use the Support repair bench.
